My mum, Heidi (nee Marx) would have been 80 today. Born in Appenzell, Switzerland, she could see both Austria and Germany from her Alpine home and recalled watching with dread the huge black mass of German soldiers preparing to cross the Rhine (they never did)I've tried writing poems about her but they always come out trite and don't do her justice.
