a brazen ecstasy which begs
the question some of us are asking -
is Peter Goulding multi-tasking?"

Some Poems by Kate Dempsey

Went along to the Maynooth launch of Kate Dempsey's 'Some Poems' at the Creative Arts Centre in Coates Lane on Thursday night. Kate herself calls it the Contemporary Arts Centre but a rose is still a rose by any other name and the venue was ideal, particularly for me as I finished work at 7pm just down the road in Leixlip.
Some Poems is more or less a Kate's Greatest Hits which is dead handy for those of us who like to have all her best stuff assembled together. Her poetry I have often described as quirky - it is definitely off the wall and she has a habit of picking up on everyday incidents and expanding them in interesting ways. Many are highly amusing but all have a subtle depth and message, layers to be stripped away and dissected. Unsurprisingly, I'm a big fan.
This edition, produced by the people who ignore me at the lovely Moth magazine, is described as 'dinky' by Kate. I would call it 'small' - physically. It can easily fit into your shirt pocket (yes, I have a shirt - for weddings and funerals) but the print is possibly not large enough for a relative with failing eyesight. Still, its a very big little book and only costs €4 here.
Delighted to meet one of the original poetry divas Triona Walsh at the launch. Very slowly ticking off my blogging friends in the meeting face-to-face department. There was also a bewildered and disorientated Sligo Rovers supporter there wearing a hat with corks dangling down and singing Tie me Kangaroo Down, Sport.

  1. Well done, Kate! And now I have another poetry collection to add to my Christmas list (pay attention Kev, or Mom).

If I ever get to Ireland (and God knows that depends on a few things these days), you'll be able to tick me off as well! Wait, that didn't come out right, did it?

I've been to Sligo and I didn't see any kangaroos.

  2. Thanks Peter for gracing us poor Maynooth-ites with your presence. Appreciate it. Glad have been the person to introduce you to another Diva.
Michael should be told that he doesn't have to travel to Perth to see kangaroos; there's one in the Blue Geranium Garden centre and cafe in West Cork. My daughter pointed it out and I thought she was winding me up. She does sometimes. Like, there's a kangaroo. Oh sure. And there actually is.
