One of my most looked-forward-to weekends of the year is fast approaching - the Baffle Festival in Loughrea over the Bank Holiday weekend. This is quite a unique weekend of poetry with locals and far-flung poets competing for the coveted Baffle turnip.
The format is quite simple. There is a theme for the competition and you read your poem at one of two pubs in the town on the Saturday night. Roughly ten are selected from each heat to go forward to the final on the Sunday evening.
There are accomplished wordsmiths and people who seldom put pen to paper from one year to the next but all are treated with the utmost reverence when its their turn to read. Add in the incomparable Declan O'Brien as MC and a host of subsidiary events and its truly one of the best weekends of the year.
This year the theme is - Rumour has it Not a theme that lends itself very much to interpretation, like last year's Off the Rails so I'm struggling at the minute to come up with an angle. But there's still over a fortnight left, so plenty of time.
