is Peter Goulding multi-tasking?"

Less than enchanted conversation

Dear Peter:
Thank you for submitting, but we will not be using your work for this edition.
Best,
Enchanted Conversation

Okay, okay, I know they were running a free competition and they all do this voluntarily and they are writing to all candidates successful and otherwise but I thought they might have padded it out a bit with some guff about the high quality of submissions, particularly after the incredibly complicated submission instructions we all had to follow!

  1. No - straight up, no beating about the bush, take it on the chin and submit again next time!!

  2. Yes, Weaver, you're quite right. I should take it like a man!

  3. Of course, you could always read our submission guidelines (which are fairly straightforward) and send us something.

  5. So sorry you felt slighted by the reply you received and put off by our guidelines. I'm glad you have other publications have guidelines you like and wish you the best.

At EC, writers get paid, and pretty well. Editors do the work for free. As a result, we have guidelines that try to let people know ahead of time what will and will not work. We deal with many hundreds of submissions a year and many are not at all right for the publication.

Finally, as a writer and editor working for many, many years, I have been shut down pretty briskly by other editors in a variety of fields. I think straightforward is best.
