"Seven bums and fourteen legs,
a brazen ecstasy which begs
the question some of us are asking -
is Peter Goulding multi-tasking?"

Water water everywhere but not a drop of drink

This week the Poetry Bus is in Dublin, being driven expertly by Jessica
The cost of a ticket this week is to come up with a poem "about bathing. Or the sea. Or swimming pools. Or the layout of your bathroom. " Presumably then a poem of an aqueous nature.
This is pretty easy for me. My wife likes wiling away holidays by the swimming pool and I write a lot in the sun lounger - naturally enough many of them are to do with swimming pools!

The sad demise of Mr Jones

The pool’s roped off with yellow tape,
The day is growing dark.
Right now he’s just a starfish shape
Down near the eight foot mark.
His wife is in an awful way
Outside the poolside wing.
She blames herself, bystanders say,
For throwing him that ring.
He got a touch of cramp, they state,
And called for her assistance,
But seemingly the ring’s dead weight
O’erpowered his resistance.
Oh yes, it was a dreadful thing
That floored poor Mr Jones.
So which of you took that lifeguard’s ring
And filled it up with stones?

For some real poets' response to the prompt, please go to Jessica's blog.

  1. Ah poor Mr. Jones! I sense foul play - & we know the wife is always the first suspect. Or did she really not realize that the ring was far too heavy? I think not!

  2. Wicked! In more senses than one. I love it.

  3. Sounds a great premise for a "Columbo" episode. Poor Mr. Jones! I couldn't help but smile at his "starfish" shape.

  4. The pool is a great place to view humanity, especially people like Mr & Mrs Jones!

  5. This is a wonderful poem - finished it off with a chuckle. "He's just a starfish shape" - I see him there and that yellow tape twisting a bit in the evening breeze. I'm just a tad late visiting around - it's almost time for the bus to show up again.
