Song lyrics mentioning other pop stars
Did this a while back with film stars.
Sweet Home Alabama came on the radio recently, which mentions Neil Young. Which got me thinking for ten minutes on other songs that mention other pop stars / bands. No self-mentions - Hey, hey we're the Monkees, Madness, Chakha Khan. No tributes - I remember Elvis Presley etc.
Mott the Hoople - All the young dudes (T Rex)
Human League - Things that dreams are made of (Johnny, Joey, Dee Dee)
Weezer - Buddy Holly (thanks Niamh!)
The Clash - 1977 (Elvis, Beatles, Rolling Stones)
David Bowie - Drive in Saturday (Jagger)
Ian Dury - Sweet Gene Vincent
Neil Sedaka - Queen of 1964 (Jagger, again, and Elvis, again)
Johnny Cash - The Night Hank Williams came to town
Dexy's Midnight Runners - Geno (Washington)
Dexy's Midnight Runners - Jackie Wilson says

ReplyDeleteLady Gaga - Dance in the Dark (Judy Garland, Liberace and, in passing, Sylvia Plath and Lady Diana too).
She definitely name checks Madonna in another one, but the title's not coming to me...
How did I not say this?
ReplyDeleteAlabama 3 - Hello, I'm Johnny Cash (Johnny Cash)
Don McLean - American Pie (everybody famous that died in that plane crash, plus the Byrds, Beatles, Dylan, Stones et al. This is sub-text by the way. My husband is playing now)
Deep Purple: Smoke on the Water (Rolling Stones and Frank Zappa).
Led Zeppelin: Hats off (to Roy Harper) - Roy Harper.
