For all ye short story writers out there - I have dabbled but found my efforts to be even worse than my poetry - the Seán Ó Faoláin Short Story Competition is now open. This year in addition to the prize money below the Munster Literature Centre promises to provide hotel accommodation and meals to the winner if they travel to Cork for the Frank O'Connor Short Story Festival in September.
First Prize: €1,500 (approx US $2000) and publication in the literary journal Southword. Second Prize: €500 (approx US $650) and publication in Southword.Four other shortlisted entries will be selected for publication in Southword and receive a fee of €100 (approx USD $130). Wonder why the currency has been converted so?
There will be a long list of twenty entrants published. The Seán Ó Faoláin Short Story Competition is an annual short story competition dedicated to one of Ireland's most accomplished story writers and theorists. Or, as someone once called him, the "indiscriminate shit spreader," (Faolain being the Irish word for a seagull.)
