I entered the Lagan Canal Trust Fund creative writing competition recently. This doesn't appear to have been a competition for serious writers but I have a great fondness for the Royal Canal here in Ireland and know what a fantastic resource our inland waterways can be. So far I have walked from Spencer Dock to Enfield and hope to complete the trip to Cloondra in co. Longford this summer. One of the poems that formed when I was doing the stretch between Maynooth and Kilcock - On Jacksons Bridge Lock - was shortlisted in the 2008 Attleborough Poetry Competition in England.
Anyway, my Lament for the Lagan, I have just learned, finished runner-up. No money but hey, they're doing a great job and it was only a bit of fun. And I'm delighted they liked the poem.
Well done Pete, conmgratulations.I love canals, my Grandfather used be on the Guinness barges, so maybe it's in the genes?
