"Seven bums and fourteen legs,
a brazen ecstasy which begs
the question some of us are asking -
is Peter Goulding multi-tasking?"

Lagan Canal Trust Competition

I entered the Lagan Canal Trust Fund creative writing competition recently. This doesn't appear to have been a competition for serious writers but I have a great fondness for the Royal Canal here in Ireland and know what a fantastic resource our inland waterways can be. So far I have walked from Spencer Dock to Enfield and hope to complete the trip to Cloondra in co. Longford this summer. One of the poems that formed when I was doing the stretch between Maynooth and Kilcock - On Jacksons Bridge Lock - was shortlisted in the 2008 Attleborough Poetry Competition in England.
Anyway, my Lament for the Lagan, I have just learned, finished runner-up. No money but hey, they're doing a great job and it was only a bit of fun. And I'm delighted they liked the poem.

  1. Well done Pete, conmgratulations.I love canals, my Grandfather used be on the Guinness barges, so maybe it's in the genes?

  2. Thanks TFE,
My grandfather fell in one once when he was drunk, so maybe its in my genes too.
